Execution produces results

Many perfectly good plans fail as they are not executed properly. It is said that 60% to 80% fail.

  • Some owners/MDs only focus on day-to-day operations and by and large ignore the strategic
  • Some hold annual strategic planning workshops and then largely ignore the content of their plans for the rest of the year
  • Some owners/MD plan on their own and simply hand down plans and objectives and expect that their teams - who have not participated in the planning process - to buy-in and do  

How to create a work pattern which shows a balance and which produces results?

Lead and manage

You have to lead and manage; be a visionary and a doer. There is a difference to being a leader and being a manager. Both are important to your company. Know your own strengths (talents, and knowledge and skills which support your talents). If you are not good at being both a leader and manager (and few people are), ensure that you have a partner or someone on your staff who cancels out your weaknesses.

Do not make the mistake of treating planning and execution as two independent processes. Involve as many of your staff in planning and execution. If not everyone can participate in planning sessions ensure that you as MD or manager explain the strategy and its objectives and the rationale for them. This is a joint venture.  Allow flexibility to your staff in the downstream choices that they might have to make. Those involved in the frontline with clients might need to adapt strategy according to the circumstances at hand. 

Ensure that feedback goes up and down between the frontline and management. 

Solid execution and consistency

You will only achieve the results you want if you execute according to a strategy of execution. Consistency in execution is vital. The involvement of all is essential. Create an effective system of workshops and meetings.
