Major corporations and multinationals
Numerous big corporations, such as Shell, Hewlett-Packard, Skandia, ABB, Halifax, Electrolux, British Airways, Coca-Cola, Volvo, NatWest Life, and a host of South African companies have adopted the Balanced Scorecard.
The BSC process is quite involved when introduced to a large company. The installation could require a year or two simply because of the many departments and the large number of people who will be drawn into the process.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
In small companies, the Balanced Scorecard usually is installed in a matter of weeks. However, organisations need time to refine and make its use a routine. ABPLAN provides follow-up services spread over 12 months to ensure full installation and execution.
ABPLAN has facilitated the installation of the BSC in companies from 1 to 1000 individuals. Some managed to install it within 30 days although it may take a few months until using it becomes a routine.
Non-profit, trusts, parastatals, local government
The Balanced Scorecard is also used by a variety of organisations outside the private sector. Non-profit organisations, parastatals, local government and municipalities use it. In some countries it also finds application in the public sector, that is, within government.
ABPLAN has facilitated BSC installations in
- more than 50 companies
- a cultural foundation and two non-profit organisations that are very dependent on donors
- a municipality where ABPLAN, at the request of PricewaterhouseCoopers, adapted the BSC to the needs of local government
- a branch of the Development Bank of Southern Africa
- a college
- the marketing division of the Business School of the University of Cape Town
- a sports discipline branch of the University of Stellenbosch
